Where do Czech medical graduates work and how much do they earn?
The salaries of doctors and other medical professionals in the Czech Republic can vary considerably depending on specialisation, level of experience, place of work and other factors:
- Specialisation: Doctors with certain specialisations, such as surgery, oncology or cardiology, tend to earn higher salaries than those working in general medicine or family practice.
- Experience: Physicians' salaries typically increase with experience. Doctors with more years of experience can usually expect higher salaries.
- Location: Salaries can vary depending on whether a doctor works in a public or private clinic, hospital or private practice.
- Region: Salaries can also vary depending on the region of the Czech Republic. For example, doctors who work in large cities tend to earn higher salaries than those who work in small towns or rural areas.
In general, highly specialised doctors such as surgeons, oncologists, cardiologists and neurosurgeons can generally expect higher salaries than general practitioners or family physicians. Approximate salary range for different physician specialisations in the Czech Republic:
- General practitioners: The average salary for general practitioners in the Czech Republic can range from around CZK 40,000 to CZK 100,000 per month, depending on experience, location and region of the country.
- Specialists: Doctors with more specialised areas such as cardiologists, oncologists, surgeons and others tend to earn higher salaries. The average salary for specialists can range from around CZK 60,000 to CZK 200,000 per month, depending on specialisation and experience.
- Nurses and nursing staff: Salaries for nurses and other nursing staff are generally lower than for doctors and can range from approximately CZK 20,000 to CZK 40,000 per month.
- Dentists: The salaries of dentists can be comparable to general practitioners, depending on experience and specialisation, and can range from approximately CZK 50,000 to CZK 100,000 per month.
It is also important that a degree from a Czech university is recognised not only in the Czech Republic, but also throughout the European Union, as well as in the USA and Canada.
Entrance examinations for medical schools in the Czech Republic
In all universities without exception, admission is based on the results of entrance examinations. The examination usually consists of a test in chemistry, physics and biology. In some cases, there is also a general prerequisites test and an oral interview before the admission committee.
1. Test in chemistry, physics and biology
The knowledge required for successful admission corresponds to the secondary school programme, but there are significant differences with the Czech secondary school programme. Each faculty publishes compendiums with model assignments, which can be purchased on the university websites
2. Examination on general prerequisites for learning in test format
It tests the applicant's ability to understand and critically analyse text and argumentation, to work with information as such, as well as verbal and non-verbal thinking, analytical and logical abilities. An example of the general prerequisites test can be found on the university website.
3. Oral interview
It is conducted only at two Prague faculties of Charles University (2nd and 3rd Faculty of Medicine). The purpose of this examination is to determine the candidate's communication skills, his/her ability to defend his/her own opinion and demonstrate interest in the chosen speciality. The topics you will discuss are rather secondary, the most important thing is the ability to speak competently and confidently. You can see a list of topics that have been encountered in previous years, for example on 2.LF.
Additional conditions for foreigners
At all universities, the language of instruction is Czech, as are the entrance examinations. The competition for all faculties is general and there are no special places for foreigners, so you compete with Czechs. Therefore, you should pay special attention to language learning in your preparation. Some faculties (1. Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Plzeň) require from foreigners a certificate of knowledge of the Czech language at the C1 level, which is the maximum possible level that can be awarded to a non-native speaker. It is very difficult to pass the C1 exam without good preparation. Good spoken Czech will come in handy at the oral interview, so do not underestimate this part of your preparation.
